At what has been termed the Berlin Summit between Chancellor Schröder, Prime Minister Blair and President Chirac, the three gentlemen proposed the creation of a new post of Deputy President of the Commission, popularly known as the post of super-Commissioner, with responsibility for coordinating all the issues relating to economic reforms of the EU.
Lors de ce qu’on a appelé le sommet de Berlin, entre le chancelier Schröder, le Premier ministre Blair et le président Chirac, ces trois gentlemen ont proposé la création d’une nouvelle fonction de vice-président de la Commission - plus populairement appelé super-commissaire -, qui serait responsable de coordonner toutes les questions relatives aux réformes économiques de l’UE.

Mr. Junichiro Koizumi, Prime Minister of Japan, Dr. Wolfgang Schüssel, Federal Chancellor of Austria, in his capacity as President of the European Council, assisted by High Representative Dr Javier Solana, and Mr. Jose Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, met in Tokyo on 24 April for the 15th Summit between Japan and the European Union.

It is for that reason that the Commission welcomes the initiative taken by Chancellor Merkel, who has spoken out in favour of a new and ambitious economic partnership between the European Union and the United States, one in which lawmaking institutions and regulatory bodies are to have their parts to play, with the participants in the summit exercising important supervisory and leadership roles.

– Mr President, the next EU-US Summit will prove a historic one, and I fully support the German Presidency’s initiative for an extensive economic partnership between the EU and the United States, which now represents some 40% of world trade, and in particular Chancellor Merkel’s ambitious aim for a transatlantic market without barriers by 2015 through mutual recognition of the same norms for various industries and services, particularly in the financial sector.
