In Transport and Tourism successfully concluded projects have provided multi-modal traveler information, integrated road transport management, standardized electronic fee collection systems and commercialized products for the emerging aeronautical telecommunications network as well as demonstrating the possibilities for integrated tourism services (PROMISE, QUARTET+, KAREN, A1, EOLIA/ProATN, EU-SPIRIT).

Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, as this debate, this plenary session and my parliamentary activity draw to a close, allow me to extend my sincerest thanks to my colleagues on the Committee on Transport and Tourism and in the secretariat of the Committee on Transport and Tourism, as well as the chairman of the Committee on Transport and Tourism and the Vice-President of the Commission and his entire DG TREN team.

Points to the impact of climate change on coastal tourism; therefore calls on the Commission on the one hand consistently to integrate the EU targets for reducing CO2 emissions into transport and tourism policy and, on the other hand, to promote measures to protect sustainable coastal tourism from the impact of climate change;

- Since 1983, no less, this Parliament - and not only its Committee on the Environment - has been calling for a Community policy on tourism which would, inter alia, take full account of the importance of the need to protect the environment and natural resources in any tourist policy. In its resolution based on the report by the Committee on the Environment concerning the European Year of Tourism, Parliament recalled that 'the quality of the environment is the basic resource of a tourist economy', which principle was included, alongside important aspects of consumer protection, in Mr McMillan-Scott's report for the Committee on Transport and Tourism, and subsequently, in Parliament's final resolution on the European Year of Transport aforementioned.
Le Parlement, et pas seulement la commission de l'environnement, n'a cessé depuis 1983, d'exiger la mise en oeuvre d'une politique communautaire du tourisme qui prenne notamment en considération l'importance de la protection de l'environnement et des ressources naturelles dans le cadre de toute politique touristique; dans sa résolution fondée sur le rapport élaboré par la commission de l'environnement à l'occasion de l'Année européenne du tourisme, le Parlement européen rappelait que "la qualité de l'environnement constitue le capital fondamental d'une économie du tourisme"; ce principe a été réaffirmé, en même temps que certains aspects importants de la protection du consommateur, dans le rapport rédigé par M. McMillan-Scott à l'intention de la commission des transports et du tourisme, ainsi que dans la résolution finale adoptée par le Parlement européen dans le cadre de l'Année européenne, susmentionnée, du tourisme.
