After hearing from 98 witnesses over the past two years in connection with its study on emerging issues related to the Canadian airline industry, the committee has determined that “efforts to improve the competiveness of regional and northern air transport should begin with transportation strategies that support air traffic growth, and infrastructure improvements that lead to accessible pricing for all Canadians” said Senator Stephen Greene, deputy chair of the committee.

Recalls the crucial role that regional policy plays in the adjustment needed for the balanced development of transport in Europe; calls on the EU and the Member States to ensure sufficient funding in their budgetary planning and sufficient project planning and implementation capacities, but not to do so to the detriment of the cohesion policy’s goals and resources; stresses that increased EU cofinancing for infrastructure projects in convergence regions can help improve the absorption of Community support; recalls the Commission’s recommendation to use monies from cohesion policy funds more resource-efficiently and to prioritise transport projects that enhance sustainability and are part of existing integrated transport strategies; invites Member States to consider that an efficient European transport network requires substantial financing, and that a wide range of sources, public as well as private, are available;

Last week, officials from Infrastructure Canada who appeared before this committee said that a national transportation strategy and a federal fund earmarked for public transit would exclude communities that do not currently have a public transit network.
