Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) projects on the trans-European Transport Network are leading the way in introducing these services.

As regards intelligent transport systems, TEN-T policy has helped in particular to prepare Galileo and the Single European Sky Air Traffic Management Research (SESAR) ( major European projects which, once operational, are expected to make the use of transport infrastructure far more efficient. In road, rail and air transport, as in Vessel Traffic Management and River Information Services, ITS projects have been developed in a flexible way, on the basis of characteristics set out in the TEN-T Guidelines. This conceptual approach makes it possible to incorporate technological developments, market needs and cooperation initiatives between partners from different Member States and, combined with the 50% funding possibility for project preparation, has had a significant impact on the development of cross-border projects which might not have existed otherwise. This kind of flexible approach to project development, based on pre-established objectives and criteria, should also be lend itself to achieving other transport policy objectives – the provision of efficient (both economically and environmentally), safe, secure and high quality transport services.
En ce qui concerne les systèmes de transport intelligents, la politique du RTE-T a contribué en particulier à préparer les projets Galileo et SESAR (programme de recherche sur la gestion du trafic aérien dans le ciel unique européen), initiatives européennes majeures qui devraient, lorsqu'elles seront opérationnelles, rendre l'utilisation des infrastructures de transport beaucoup plus efficace. En ce qui concerne le transport routier, ferroviaire et aérien, par exemple la gestion du trafic maritime (VTM) et les services d’information fluviale (SIF), des projets en matière de systèmes de transport intelligents ont été élaborés de façon flexible, sur la base des caractéristiques définies par les orientations relatives au RTE-T. Cette approche théorique permet d’incorporer les évolutions technologiques, les besoins du marché et les initiatives de coopération entre partenaires issus de différents États membres; alliée à la possibilité de contribution à hauteur de 50 % pour la préparation des projets, elle a eu une incidence notable sur le développement de projets transfrontaliers, qui sinon n’auraient peut-être pas existé. Les méthodes flexibles de mise en œuvre de projets de ce type, fondées sur des objectifs et critères préétablis, devraient aussi se prêter à la réalisation d'autres objectifs de la politique de transport, à savoir la fourniture de services de transport efficaces (du point de vue économique comme environnemental), sûrs, fiables et de grande qualité.

The MIP was established to streamline and improve the management of the transeuropean transport network: it encompasses the on-going "Essen" priority projects plus the new policy priorities, namely the Galileo project, the removal of bottlenecks on the TEN-T rail network, cross-border projects and intelligent transport systems for the road and air systems.
Le programme indicatif pluriannuel a été mis en place afin de rationaliser et d'améliorer la gestion du réseau transeuropéen de transport: il comprend les projets prioritaires de la liste d'Essen qui sont en cours, ainsi que les nouvelles priorités de politique, notamment le projet Galileo, la suppression des goulets d'étranglement du réseau ferroviaire RTE-T, les projets transfrontaliers et les systèmes de transport routier et aérien intelligents.

Finally, the Commission proposes that six new projects should be added and new sections tagged on to two existing projects: the high-capacity rail link through the Pyrenees; the global satellite radionavigation and positioning system (Galileo); the Eastern European high-speed train/combined transport system; the Fehmarn Belt bridge/tunnel between Denmark and Germany; improved navigability on the Danube between Straubing and Vilshofen; interoperability of the high-speed Iberian rail network; adding the mixed freight/high-speed line between Montpellier and Nîmes; extending the Brenner project from Munich to Verona to add the Verona-Naples route and the Bologna-Milan branch.
Enfin, la Commission propose d'ajouter 6 nouveaux projets et des sections nouvelles à 2 projets existants : la liaison ferroviaire à grande capacité à travers les Pyrénées ; le système global de radionavigation et de positionnement par satellite Galileo ; le train à grande vitesse/transport combiné est européen ; le pont/tunnel du Fehmarn belt entre le Danemark et l'Allemagne ; l'amélioration de la navigabilité du Danube entre Straubing et Vilshofen ; l'interopérabilité ferroviaire du réseau ibérique à grande vitesse ; le rajout de la ligne mixte fret/train à grande vitesse entre Montpellier et Nîmes ; l'extension du projet du Brenner de Munich à Vérone pour y rajouter la dorsale Vérone-Naples ainsi que la branche Bologne-Milan.

The priorities of the scheme include socio-economic studies to help define long-term transport policy, the construction of experimental transport systems to demonstrate novel concepts, and industrial research projects, like for example, noise and vibration reduction in trains, and technologies and systems for the development of low environmental impact buses.
Le programme est centré prioritairement sur la réalisation d'études socio-économiques en vue de la définition d'une politique à long terme dans le domaine des transports, sur l'élaboration de systèmes de transport expérimentaux pour la démonstration de concepts nouveaux, et sur la mise en oeuvre de projets de recherche industrielle, concernant par exemple la réduction du bruit et des vibrations dans les trains, ainsi que des technologies et systèmes pour la conception d'autobus ayant une faible impact sur l'environnement.

Further projects are planned for joint waste-water management and solid waste disposal as well as the systematic surveying of biotopes that are particularly worth protecting or endangered. Examples are the creation of a shared public-transport system between Salzburg and Berchtesgardener Land, the introduction of a cross-border information system and transport plan in the Karwendel natural park, the introduction of a shared ski-pass system, cooperation for the training of journalists and the development of an advertising concept for farm holidays in Berchtesgardener Land-Salzburger Land.
Des projets communs d'evacuation et de traitement des eaux usees et des dechets sont egalement prevus, ainsi que la surveillance systematique de territoires particulierement dignes de protection et menaces. a titre d'exemple, les projets suivants sont prevus : creation d'un systeme de communaute de transport entre Salzbourg et Berchtesgaden, etablissement d'un systeme d'information transfrontalier ainsi que d'un plan de transport dans le site naturel protege de Karwendel, mise en place d'un systeme de reseau transfrontalier de forfaits pour l'utilisation des remontees mecaniques des stations de sports d'hiver, collaboration dans le secteur de la formation des journalistes ou mise en oeuvre d'une action promotionnelle "Vacances a la ferme" a Berchtesgaden et Salzbourg.
