Stresses that European initiatives in the field of cohesion and structural policy need to be better coordinated so as not to jeopardise the coherence of regional policy; calls therefore for strengthened coordination in the Commission between DG REGIO, which is responsible for cohesion and structural policy, and the DGs responsible for the relevant sector-specific initiatives; calls, in view of the Lisbon Treaty’s strengthening of the rights of regional and local authorities, for these authorities to be more closely involved in the development of policy at Commission level, in order to enhance project responsibility among project promoters; also calls, however, for more control of results by the Commission on the spot, so as to improve evaluation both of the efficiency of project structures and of the effectiveness of measures in terms of the objective they seek to achieve;

Given, on the one hand, the growing child obesity rates in the EU 27, and on the other hand, the importance of life-long health as the EU population ages, the inclusion of sport as an EU competence under Lisbon is to be welcomed. To reflect the Treaty’s strengthened recognition of the importance of sport, would the Council be supportive of any initiative to include sport explicitly in the portfolio of one of the incoming Commissioners?
Sachant que, d’une part, le taux d’enfants obèses dans l’Union européenne est en constante augmentation et que, d’autre part, être en bonne santé tout au long de sa vie revêt une importance d’autant plus grande que la population européenne vieillit, il faut se féliciter qu’en vertu du traité de Lisbonne, le sport devienne une compétence de l’Union européenne. Afin de tenir compte de la reconnaissance accrue qu’accorde ledit traité à l’importance du sport, le Conseil appuierait-il une initiative visant à ajouter explicitement le sport au portefeuille de l’un des nouveaux membres de la Commission?

To anyone who today is still fighting this treaty in the erroneous belief that it is a treaty that strengthens the European Union, I would say: those who fight this treaty are, in actual fact, strengthening our so-called partners or, if you like, our opponents.

The Lisbon Treaty amended Article 228 of the EC Treaty, now Article 260 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (the Treaty), to strengthen two aspects of the mechanism.
