Speaking at a press conference after the Summit, President Juncker underlined the significant EU assistance to Ukraine; he noted the ambitious and important reforms being undertaken in Ukraine, applauding the courage of the people of Ukraine; and he announced an additional €70 million in support for Chernobyl.
A la conférence de presse, faisant suite au Sommet, le Président Juncker a souligné l'importance du soutien de l'UE à l'Ukraine; il a reconnu les réformes ambitieuses et importantes menées par l'Ukraine, il a salué le courage du peuple ukrainien et il a annoncé un soutien supplémentaire de €70 million pour Chernobyl.

One is a letter from the Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs addressed to Mr. Denis Robert, which basically states that he is sending a brochure, the federal judicial appointments process, a list of the committee chairmen, a copy of the order in council in respect of Mr. Justice Strayer, and then there is a note that says, " In response to Senator Cools' request for additional information of the cost of the Canada-Ukraine judicial cooperation project, I am pleased to inform you that the contribution by CIDA is $1,848,300 and that the contribution by the Ukraine was set at $909,750" .

If the President succeeds in both reinforcing his own power base and achieving an economic recovery by carrying out central reforms in Ukraine, which is, of course, one of the poorest countries of this continent, he will perhaps keep himself on his presidential throne for longer and I believe that that would be something that, plainly and simply, the European Union would have to take note of.

Both sides agreed that there was considerable potential to boost bilateral trade and to stimulate a much greater inflow of direct investment from the EU into Ukraine and in general to help Ukraine's integration into a wider area of economic cooperation in Europe. The President recalled that the European Summit in Helsinki last December had adopted an EU Common Strategy for Ukraine, noting Ukraine's European aspiration and welcoming Ukraine's pro-European choice. In this regard, Mr Patten underlined the importance of using the potential of the PCA to deepen political and economic ties with the Union and to prepare Ukraine for accession to the WTO. He endorsed Ukraine's wish to complete accession to the WTO rapidly and encouraged Mr Yushchenko to persevere in taking the necessary steps. This would also make it possible to envisage in due time discussion on a bilateral free trade area with the EU.
