– (PT) Madam President, highlighting the effect of wars and conflicts on women and children is of the utmost importance at a time as critical as this, when wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are dragging on, severe conflicts are being fuelled, such as in the Israeli-occupied territories of Palestine, or the Western Sahara occupied by Morocco, inequalities are increasing, poverty is being exacerbated by neoliberal policies, and new threats are arising, as happened this weekend in Lisbon with the NATO summit and the adoption of its new strategic concept.
– (PT) Madame la Présidente, souligner l’effet des guerres et des conflits sur les femmes et les enfants est de la plus haute importance à une époque aussi critique que celle-ci, avec des guerres en Irak et en Afghanistan qui s’éternisent, avec de graves conflits qui sont constamment alimentés, comme dans les territoires occupés par les Israéliens en Palestine, ou dans le Sahara occidental, occupé par le Maroc, avec des inégalités qui se creusent, avec la pauvreté exacerbée par les politiques néolibérales, et avec de nouvelles menaces croissantes, comme ce fut le cas ce week-end à Lisbonne avec le sommet de l’OTAN et l’adoption de ce nouveau concept stratégique.

Regrets that the UNHRC has been unable sufficiently promptly to address other serious human rights situations; calls on EU Member States to condemn human rights violations and actively seek the creation of dedicated UNHRC mechanisms to respond to the human rights crises in Afghanistan, Guinea Conakry, Iran, Yemen, Iraq and Western Sahara; maintains that the UN mandate includes monitoring of the human rights situation in Western Sahara;

As such, there is a total absence of any references to and denouncements of the flagrant violations of human rights in Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan, occupied Cyprus or the Western Sahara, as perpetrated by EU countries and/or their allies such as the US, Israel, Turkey or Morocco.
