In March 1972 Hertta Kuusinen, a Communist member of the Finnish Parliament and second chairperson of the Women’s International Democratic Federation (WIDF), proposed to the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) that the UN declare an ‘International Women’s Year’ in order to draw the attention of the UN and the world to the situation of women and their specific problems.
C'est en mars 1972 que Hertta Kuusinen, députée communiste finlandaise et deuxième présidente de la Fédération démocratique internationale des femmes (FDIM), a proposé à la Commission de la condition de la femme que l'ONU proclame une "Année internationale de la femme" en vue d'attirer l'attention des Nations unies et du monde sur la situation et les problèmes spécifiques des femmes.
