Because COSTI's work is primarily working with immigrants, I will focus my remarks on what I believe to be some of the major barriers that new Canadians face in trying to establish themselves in Canadian society.

Points out that making carriers and the authorities of the countries of origin properly aware of their responsibilities, strengthening the legal framework within which punitive measures may be taken against networks of "people smugglers", action to combat illegal working and trafficking in human beings, and the identification of administrative corruption are integral parts of the fight against illegal immigration, which must be based on a high level of police and judicial cooperation; calls, therefore, on the Union and its Member States to take vigorous steps to combat illegal working by immigrants by introducing a raft of severe sanctions against the businesses involved, stepping up the human resources available for supervisory activities and protecting victims;

I have voted for this report and support it in line with my past work on immigration matters – particularly my work on secondary immigration issues like the 'primary purpose' marriage rule in the UK.
