The Greek religious world, the Academy of Athens, the Archaeological Society, the Greek section of ICOMOS (an international organisation), the PEA association (the Greek Union of Architects), the opposition parties, the Athens municipal council and a great many European environmental organisations and scientists are united in opposing the location of the rowing and canoeing centre and other facilities required for the 2004 Olympic Games in the Marathon-Schinias area for the following reasons:
Toute la Grèce spirituelle et intellectuelle - depuis l'Académie d'Athènes jusqu'à la Société d'archéologie, en passant par la section grecque du Conseil international des monuments et des sites, l'Association des architectes - PEA, les partis de l'opposition et le conseil municipal d'Athènes, à quoi viennent s'ajouter une multitude d'organisations écologiques et de savants de toute l'Europe - s'oppose à l'aménagement du plan d'eau destiné aux épreuves d'aviron et de kayak, ainsi que d'autres installations requises pour les Jeux olympiques de 2004, dans la région de Marathon-Skhinia, et ce pour les raisons suivantes :
