The Cairo Conference was one of the most significant of all the international conferences held in the 1990s. The series began with the World Conference on Education for All, held in Jomtien, Thailand, and the World Summit for Children held in New York in 1990, and continued with the UN Conference on Environment and Development, held in Rio in 1992, the World Conference on Human Rights, held in Vienna in 1993, the World Summit for Social Development, held in Copenhagen, and the World Conference on Women, held in Beijing in 1995, and the Habitat II Conference, held in Istanbul, and the World Food Summit held in Rome in 1996.
