En outre, le Conseil a perçu la nécessité d’aborder les prochaines négociations de l’OMC dans une optique offensive en vue de parvenir entre autres aux objectifs suivants : tirer pleinement avantage de l’expansion du commerce mondial tout en conservant et en développant le modèle agricole communautaire et son caractère multifonctionnel, le tout dans le respect de normes de qualité et de sécurité élevées ; inscrire la libéralisation du marché dans un cadre qui accorde une reconnaissance internationale aux contraintes imposées aux agriculteurs et aux produits agricoles de l’Union et ne remette pas en question le principe de la préférence communautaire.

I therefore believe we must trust the Commission’s ability – as I have said – to deal with this matter, protest as appropriate, call for suitable compensation and use retaliatory measures, while fully complying with World Trade Organisation rules. The Presidency-in-Office of the Council believes that our most powerful option is to call on the United States to comply with the rules that all the founders of the World Trade Organisation have set for themselves.
