Based on real accident investigations, it became apparent that the vehicles equipped with devices of indirect vision, such as mirrors of wide-angle (Class IV) and close proximity (Class V) or camera-monitor, improve vulnerable road users' safety and avoid accidents due to the lateral blind spot on the passenger's side.
Uit onderzoek op basis van ongevallensimulaties is duidelijk geworden dat het uitrusten van voertuigen met inrichtingen voor indirect zicht, zoals breedtespiegels (klasse IV) en trottoirspiegels (klasse V) of camera's/monitors, de veiligheid van kwetsbare weggebruikers verbetert en ongevallen als gevolg van de zijdelingse dode hoek aan de passagierszijde voorkomt.

The equipment with devices of indirect vision eliminating blind spots is compulsory for new HGV's. According to Dir. 2003/97/EC, the fitting of wide-angle mirrors (Class IV), close-proximity mirrors (Class V) or supplementary vision, for those vehicles of category N2 above 7.5 t and less 12 t and for all those of category N3 (above 12 t), is mandatory as from 26 January 2006 to any new vehicle type and from 26 January 2007 to any new vehicle.
Op grond van Richtlijn 2003/97/EG is de installatie van een breedtespiegel (klasse IV), een trottoirspiegel (klasse V) of een aanvullend systeem voor indirect zicht bij voertuigen van categorie N2 tussen 7,5t en 12t en bij alle voertuigen van categorie N3 (meer dan 12t) vanaf 26 januari 2006 verplicht voor elk nieuw voertuigtype en vanaf 26 januari 2007 voor elk nieuw voertuig.
