In 2011, in the context of the EU 2020 strategy, the EU presented the Social Business Initiative, an action plan to enhance the framework for social entrepreneurship by improving access to finance, increasing the visibility of the sector and raising awareness of the needs of social entrepreneurs among policy makers.
In 2011 heeft de EU in de context van de EU 2020-strategie het initiatief voor maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemen voorgesteld. Het gaat om een actieplan dat het kader voor sociale ondernemingen moet versterken door de sector betere toegang tot financiering en grotere zichtbaarheid te bieden en door de beleidsmakers scherper bewust te maken van de behoeften van sociale ondernemers.

1. Considers that the definition of social enterprise in the Communication on social business initiative is a positive step towards recognising the specific nature of this type of organisation; asks that this description be used in all EU institutions; insists on the necessity of this description being used in the draft regulation on European funding for the Social Business Initiative; insists, moreover, that the three key dimensions that distinguish social enterprises – namely social objective/aim, entrepreneurial activity and governance favouring participation – be taken into consideration;
3. is van mening dat de definitie van een sociale onderneming zoals die wordt voorgesteld in de mededeling inzake het initiatief voor sociaal ondernemerschap een stap voorwaarts is op weg naar erkenning van de specifieke aard van dit type organisatie, en dringt erop aan dat deze omschrijving in alle instellingen van de Unie wordt gehanteerd; benadrukt nogmaals hoe belangrijk het is dat deze omschrijving wordt gebruikt in de ontwerpverordening inzake Europese financiering voor het initiatief voor sociaal ondernemerschap; dringt er bovendien op aan dat de drie belangrijkste dimensies die tekenend zijn voor sociale ondernemingen - namelijk een sociale doelstelling, ondernemerschap en een op participatie gerichte bestuursvorm - in overweging worden genomen;

The Social Business Initiative contains a number of actions to support its further development.
Het Initiatief voor maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemen omvat een aantal maatregelen om de verdere ontwikkeling ervan te steunen.

First, the Social Business Initiative will help this emerging sector to fulfil its unexploited potential.

The three-part programme has been designed for all Latin American countries which have cooperation agreements with the Community. It will: - inject impetus into Latin American networks by using business initiatives to create or strengthen focal points for cooperation with Community counterparts; - develop systematic information exchanges by using the opportunities offered by European business networks; - start up a programme of regular, sector-based meetings in both Latin America and the Community and use events such as specialized international fairs to encourage the various protagonists and intermediaries to take part in such meetings.
