The early 20th century in Europe brought with it not just the circus tent but also 'technical' innovations such as sawdust, and tents with several rings, together with new, different kinds of circus performances, such as dressage and acts featuring exotic animals as well as acrobatics as a programme item in its own right.
Samen met de circustent werden in Europa aan het begin van de 20e eeuw niet alleen nieuwigheden voor wat betreft de uitrusting geïntroduceerd, zoals zaagsel en tenten met meerdere maneges, maar ook geheel nieuwe circusprogramma's, zoals bijvoorbeeld dressuurnummers en showacts met exotische dieren, terwijl ook de acrobatiek werd gepresenteerd als zelfstandig programmaonderdeel.
