This approach will contribute to achieving food safety and security for all Europeans and eradication of hunger in the world; decreasing the burden of food- and diet-related diseases by promoting the shift towards healthy and sustainable diets, via consumer education and innovations in agriculture and the food industry; reducing water and energy consumption in food processing, transport and distribution; reducing food waste by 50 % by 2030; and achieving a broad diversity of healthy, high quality and safe food for all.

Observable first and foremost in small-sized industries, agro-food industries, of which 90% are SMEs, will particularly benefit from many research activities, including targeted dissemination and technology transfer activities, in particular as regards the integration and uptake of advanced eco-efficient technologies, methodologies and processes and the development of standards. High-tech start-ups from the bio-, nano- and ICT are expected to provide important contributions to the areas of plant breeding, improved crops and plant protection, advanced detection and monitoring technologies for ensuring food safety and quality, and new industrial bioprocesses.

Furthermore, the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies in its opinion "on a request from the Commission related to a Novel Food application from Forbes Medi-Tech for approval of plant sterol-containing milk-based beverages" of 25 November 2003 concurred for that application with the conclusions of the SCF, in its opinion on applications for approval of a variety of plant sterol enriched foods of 5 March 2003, came to the conclusion that the addition of phytosterols is safe, provided that the daily consumption does not exceed 3 g.
Verder heeft het panel voor dieetproducten, voeding en allergieën van de Europese Autoriteit voor voedselveiligheid (EFSA) zich in zijn advies van 25 november 2003 naar aanleiding van een verzoek van de Commissie betreffende een aanvraag van Forbes Medi-Tech om goedkeuring van plantensterolen-bevattende dranken op basis van melk als nieuwe voedingsmiddelen wat die aanvraag betreft aangesloten bij de conclusies van het WCMV, dat in zijn advies over aanvragen tot goedkeuring van een reeks met plantensterolen verrijkte voedingsmiddelen van 5 maart 2003 geconcludeerd heeft dat de toevoeging van fytosterolen veilig is, mits de dagelijkse inname niet meer bedraagt dan 3 g.
