The Italian delegation, supported by the Greek, Cypriot, Polish, French, Spanish, Maltese and Hungarian delegations, raised its concern regarding the economic impact of avian influenza on the poultry industry in the EU and asked the Commission to take appropriate emergency measures to support the businesses severely affected by the fall in prices for poultry meat (5519/06).

The French delegation noted the heavy financial consequences of AI on the poultry industry, the positive reaction taken at the Management Committee on poultry meat and eggs on 16 November, but asked for an increase of the export refunds on poultry meat, including on new destinations (North-African countries, Egypt, Cuba and South Africa), as well as Community co-financing for national advertising campaign on poultry meat in the EU, and urged the Commission to react rapidly to a crisis situation.
