Status van kandidaat-land en openingssignalen zijn allemaal prima, maar dan moeten wij ook de moed hebben om tegen onszelf te zeggen dat wij Turkije onmogelijk in de Europese Unie kunnen opnemen zolang de Turkse regering de resoluties van de VN-Veiligheidsraad over Cyprus blijft negeren, zolang Turkije het bestaan van een Koerdische minderheid blijft ontkennen en alleen over terroristen wil spreken en zolang de doodstraf als een zwaard van Damocles boven het hoofd van Öcalan blijft hangen.
