In early 2014, the EU adopted a decision to enable EU countries to ratify the 1990 ILO Convention concerning Safety in the Use of Chemicals at Work (Convention No 170).
In het begin van 2014 nam de EU een besluit om het EU-landen mogelijk te maken het Verdrag van de Internationale Arbeidsorganisatie over de veiligheid bij het gebruik van chemische stoffen bij de arbeid uit 1990 (Verdrag nr. 170) te ratificeren.

When depositing the instrument referred to in Article 58(2) of the Convention, the Union shall make the reservation provided for in Article 44(3) of the Convention concerning the Member States that object to the use of either English or French in communications between Central Authorities.

In addition to Articles 10 and 11 of the Convention, concerning the PIC procedure properly so called, the Council and the interveners refer more particularly, in that connection, to the provisions concerning notification of national regulatory action intended to ban or severely restrict chemicals (Article 5), the procedure to be followed for listing chemicals in Annex III to the Convention or to remove them (Articles 7 to 9), the rules on the labelling of such products (Article 13), the exchange of information of all kinds on chemicals covered by the Convention (Article 14), the creation or strengthening of infrastructures and of national institutions in order to apply the Convention effectively, in particular by setting up registers and databases containing information on the safety of chemicals (Article 15) and technical assistance to be given to developing countries and countries with economies in transition (Article 16).
Buiten de artikelen 10 en 11 van dit verdrag, die de eigenlijke PIC-procedure betreffen, vermelden de Raad en de interveniënten in dit verband inzonderheid de bepalingen betreffende de kennisgeving van nationale regelgeving die chemische stoffen beoogt te verbieden of aan strenge beperkingen te onderwerpen (artikel 5), de procedure die moet worden gevolgd om chemische stoffen in bijlage III bij het verdrag op te nemen of ze daaruit te schrappen (artikelen 7 tot en met 9), de regels voor de etikettering van deze stoffen (artikel 13), de uitwisseling van informatie van alle aard over de chemische stoffen die onder de werkingssfeer van het verdrag vallen (artikel 14), de vestiging of de versterking op nationaal niveau van de voor de daadwerkelijke toepassing van het verdrag benodigde infrastructuur en instellingen, met name door de instelling van registers en gegevensbanken die veiligheidsinformatie over chemische stoffen bevatten (artikel 15), en de aan ontwikkelingslanden of landen met een overgangseconomie te verlenen technische bijstand (artikel 16).

Article 93 of the Schengen Convention (CIS) states that "the purpose of the Schengen Information System, under this Convention, is to maintain public order and safety, including State security, and to implement the provisions of this Convention concerning the movement of persons in the territory of the [Member States concerned] by means of information transmitted via this system".
