This important fishery is regulated by the IATTC (Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission), a regional fisheries organisation which has been granted powers by its contracting parties to regulate fishing for highly migratory stocks in the eastern Pacific Ocean.

It also paved the way to the EU joining the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) which is responsible for the conservation and management of tuna and other marine resources in the eastern Pacific Ocean.
