Two important recent developments relating to the harmonisation of definitions and lists of waste and the establishment of reliable waste databases are worth noting in this regard, namely the adoption of the consolidated European Waste Catalogue and the adoption of the new Regulation on Waste Statistics.

With regard to Austria, the Commission has found that the nationally adopted definitions do not comply with the European definitions and that the Austrian legislation fails to transpose the European Waste Catalogue and Hazardous Waste List.

URGES the Commission, in co-operation with Member States and taking into account the work being done in international fora, to intensify its efforts to develop agreed terminology and definitions in order to facilitate the achievement of a greater degree of harmonization in the application of Community legislation and to consider the need for review of the European Waste Catalogue and the Hazardous Waste List with a view to improving operational effectiveness;
8.1. DRINGT er bij de Commissie op aan in samenwerking met de Lid-Staten, en rekening houdend met het werk dat in het kader van internationale fora wordt verricht, sterker te streven naar de ontwikkeling van overeengekomen terminologie en definities om een meer geharmoniseerde toepassing van de communautaire wetgeving te vergemakkelijken, en om na te gaan of de Europese Afvalcatalogus en de Lijst van gevaarlijke afvalstoffen met het oog op meer operationele doeltreffendheid moeten worden geactualiseerd ;
