The recent sharp growth in money supply and credit requires careful monitoring and a readiness to take prompt actions.

If we look at the reality of the ECB's concerns over the last few years, we can see that there has not been a stable relationship between the money supply and the growth of nominal income.

The programme included several important measures, namely: the unification of the exchange rates; the reduction of the budget deficit from 28% in 1993 to 4% of the GNP in 1994 (11 trillion NKz); the limitation of money supply growth to 102,5% during the first 12 months of the plan in order to lower the inflation rate to 260% in 1994 and to 100% from March 1994 to March 1995; a growth of the GNP of 2.5%, mainly through increases of oil prices.
