The successful mastering, integration and deployment of enabling technologies by European industry is a key factor in strengthening Europe's productivity and innovation capacity and ensuring that Europe has an advanced, sustainable and competitive economy, global leadership in hi-tech application sectors and the ability to develop effective and sustainable solutions for societal challenges.

3. Calls for more integrated and systemic approaches to industrial renewal and regional development, and for increased coherence between the different policies at EU, national, regional, interregional and crossborder level, in order to ensure that the potential of the European industrial sector is exploited; stresses the need to create economic zones of regional importance and hi-tech parks on a basis of public-private partnerships, and to contribute to improving the use of local and regional human and economic resources using the latest technologies;

Considers that innovation and identifying competitive advantage are crucial to the EU in a global economy where competitiveness is often based on cheap labour costs; stresses the role that the EU’s trade policy can play for sustainable development and the creation of more and better jobs by exploiting green technologies and accordingly urges the Commission to propose initiatives to support the development of hi-tech and green technologies, products, and services;
