At a time when we are commemorating such a significant anniversary, it is all the more dispiriting for us that, just a few days beforehand, the Hungarian Parliament, and later the President of Hungary, sign a constitution that runs counter to the fundamental principles of democracy. It is also unfortunate because the Hungarian Government, and Hungary as a country, currently holds the Presidency of the European Union.
Daarom is het des te bedroevender dat juist enkele dagen voordat we dit belangrijke jubileum hebben herdacht het Hongaarse Parlement, en daarna de Hongaarse president, een grondwet hebben ondertekend die in strijd is met de grondbeginselen van de democratie. Het is ook treurig dat de Hongaarse regering, en Hongarije als land, juist nu de Europese Unie voorzitten.

I strongly agree with this idea. Perhaps you remember that, some time ago, at the start of the Hungarian Presidency of the European Union, the Hungarian Prime Minister, too, made it clear in this House that it is not enough to cope with and manage the after-effects of the crisis, to encourage Member States to follow a tighter fiscal policy and to also inspect this.
Misschien herinnert u zich nog dat de Hongaarse premier aan het begin van het Hongaarse voorzitterschap in deze zaal ook duidelijk maakte dat het niet genoeg is om de effecten van de crisis te behandelen en aan te pakken, en de lidstaten tot een strakker begrotingsbeleid aan te zetten en dit ook te controleren.

whereas the Commission raised concerns and requested information from the Hungarian Government regarding the conformity of the Hungarian media law with the AVMSD and the acquis communautaire in general, notably in relation to the obligation to offer balanced coverage applicable to all audiovisual media service providers, and also questioned whether that law complied with the principle of proportionality and respected the fundamental right to freedom of expression and information enshrined in Article 11 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights, the country-of-origin principle and registration requirements, and whereas the Hungarian Government responded by providing further information and by commencing the process of amending the law to address the points raised by the Commission,

Over the past couple of weeks, at the outset of the Hungarian Presidency, a great many critical words have been said about the Hungarians, and very often these words have been unfounded and unjustified. Unfortunately, besides the words of the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Luxembourg, other words, which were also very unfair and which were, I think, offensive to the Hungarians, have come from the mouths of politicians of this House, including from Mr Schulz.
In de voorbije weken, aan het begin van het voorzitterschap van Hongarije kregen de Hongaren heel wat kritiek te verduren en deze kritiek was vaak ongegrond en onrechtvaardig.
