Is aware that in Europe, where food wastage is highest at retail and consumption level, the main orientation of waste reduction efforts should be towards exchange of best practices, improved routines in the treatment of food and a change in behaviour on the part of companies and individuals throughout the whole food chain, from the beginning to the end, to markedly decrease food waste, while only a coordinated action between EU and national regulators, industry and consumer organisations can achieve tangible results; urges the Commission and the Member States therefore to lend their support to awareness-raising measures and campaigns aimed at those goals, and more particularly at cultivating awareness of the link between consumption and production, costs, waste, health and the environment, but also aimed at educating young people, starting already in early childhood, on how to deal with food, food discards and leftovers;
20. is zich ervan bewust dat er in Europa, waar het grootste voedselverlies plaatsvindt bij de kleinhandel en het verbruik, de inspanningen op het gebied van afvalvermindering hoofdzakelijk gericht moeten zijn op de uitwisseling van goede praktijken, betere voedselverwerkingsroutines en een gedragswijziging bij bedrijven en individuen in de gehele voedselketen, van het begin tot het einde, om voedselafval duidelijk te kunnen terugdringen, waarbij enkel gecoördineerde maatregelen tussen de nationale en EU-regelgevers, het bedrijfsleven en consumentenorganisaties tot concrete resultaten kunnen leiden; verzoekt de Commissie en de lidstaten bijgevolg hun steun te verlenen aan bewustmakingscampagnes en campagnes die deze doelstellingen nastreven, met name campagnes die erop wijzen dat er een verband bestaat tussen consumptie en productie, kosten, afval, gezondheid en milieu, alsook voorlichtingscampagnes voor jongeren, die reeds op zeer jonge leeftijd beginnen, over hoe moet worden omgegaan met voedsel, het weggooien ervan en restjes;
