The isotope ratio mass spectrometer must either be equipped with a dual inlet, to alternately measure the unknown sample and a reference sample, or use an integrated system that carries out the quantitative combustion of samples and separates the carbon dioxide from the other combustion products before measurement in the mass spectrometer.
