The vocal tics are often multiple with explosive repetitive vocalizations, throat-clearing, and grunting, and there may be the use of obscene words or phrases. Sometimes there is associated gestural echopraxia which may also be of an obscene nature (copropraxia).

De stoornis verergert doorgaans tijdens de adolescentie en neigt te blijven bestaan tot op volwassen leeftijd. De vocale tics zijn dikwijls multipel met explosieve en herhaalde vocalisatie, keelschrapen, grommen en er kunnen obscene woorden of uitdrukkingen worden gebruikt. Soms gaat dit samen met gebaren (echopraxie) die eveneens een obsceen karakter kunnen hebben (copropraxie).
