An excellent example of promoting multiculturalism and multilingualism is the European Parliament initiatives of the LUX Film Prize and the forthcoming LUX Film Festival.

Brussels, 16 May 2012 - Eighteen films supported by the European Commission's MEDIA programme are in the Cannes Film Festival's 'Official Selection' this year, of which seven are in competition for the Palme d’Or, notably "Amour" by Michael Haneke, "The Angel's Share" by Ken Loach and "Jagten" (The Hunt) by Thomas Vinterberg (full list in annex).

Vinterberg, who is the President of the jury for the 'Un Certain Regard' selection at this year's festival, first came to worldwide prominence with his 1998 film Festen (The Celebration), which won a multitude of awards including the Special Jury Prize at Cannes.

Aside from the official Festival awards, two MEDIA-funded films in "La Quinzaine des Réalisateurs" selection also received prizes yesterday night: Eldorado directed by Bouli Lanners (€51.500) received the "Label Europa Cinémas" Prize, the "Regards Jeunes" Prize, the "Prix de la critique internationale" and God's offices by Claire Simon (€16.000) received the "Société des Auteurs Compositeurs Dramatiques" Prize.

Urges the Member States and candiate countries to establish national film academies, where these do not yet exist, or to support them, with a remit to enhance the prestige and profile of national and (indirectly) European films in the eyes of the general public, particularly by awarding national film prizes and selecting entries for major international film prizes, such as the European Film Awards and the American Academy Awards;
