Although many Iranian women have now liberated themselves ‘behind the chador’, and now account for 57% of new students at the country’s universities, very little has happened in principle to change the systematic discrimination against women, which derives less from Islamic law itself than from the interpretation of that law by a few (male) clerical lawyers.
