Draws attention to the humanitarian emergencies in Syria, Iraq, South Sudan, the Central African Republic, Yemen and Ukraine, and to the situations in the countries worst affected by natural disasters, such as Haiti and Nepal, and by the Ebola virus; underlines that the complexity of crises has increased the challenges faced by the EU as a global actor; warns of the political consequences of far-reaching budgetary cuts and insists that the extraordinary scale of the current global humanitarian needs must be reflected in the funding for the Directorate-General for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO);

I. whereas the European Commission’s Development Cooperation department (DG DEVCO) and Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (DG ECHO) have pledged more than EUR 147 million in humanitarian and development aid in order to contain the spread of the virus, provide treatment and essential equipment to infected persons and deploy humanitarian experts;
I. overwegende dat de dienst Ontwikkelingssamenwerking (DG DEVCO) en de dienst Humanitaire Hulp en Burgerbescherming (DG ECHO) van de Commissie meer dan 147 miljoen EUR aan humanitaire en ontwikkelingshulp hebben toegezegd om de verspreiding van het virus een halt toe te roepen, behandeling en hoognodige uitrusting ter beschikking te stellen aan besmette personen, en humanitaire deskundigen in te zetten;

10. Emphasises the need to rapidly invest, through DG ECHO, in preparedness in the neighbouring countries in order to prevent and/or limit the spread of the virus in other fragile countries of West Africa;
