Faced with the numerous threats that regularly place a strain on those regions, from tsunamis to volcanic eruptions, earthquakes to cyclones, and, from now on, the reactivation of mosquito-borne viral diseases, such as chikungunya in Réunion or dengue in Guyana, the overseas populations are awaiting a suitable response from Europe in terms of security, prevention and solidarity.
De ultraperifere regio's staan voortdurend bloot aan tal van bedreigingen – tsunami's, vulkaanuitbarstingen, aardbevingen, cyclonen en nu ook weer risico's van door muggen overgebrachte virale ziekten, zoals het chikungunya-virus op het eiland Réunion en de knokkelkoorts in Guyana –, en de overzeese bevolking verwacht een op haar situatie toegesneden antwoord van Europa als het gaat om veiligheid, preventie en solidariteit.
