The Commission services also provided in 2013 a working document containing templates for the provisions of an ERIC based on the experience gained in the application process of the first ERICs in order to facilitate the drafting of the provisions by the applicants and achieving a more coherent set of provisions for the ERICs without prejudice to the flexibility and adaptation necessary for reflecting the diverse character of the various ERICs in terms of structure (single sited, distributed, virtual) and in terms of areas of research (social sciences and humanities, environmental sciences, energy, biological and medical sciences, materials and analytical facilities, physical sciences and engineering).

Moreover, in the light of recent attempts to introduce supposed hierarchies in the sciences, it is important to avoid marginalising the social sciences and humanities in favour of other areas of knowledge.

In total, 4741 proposals were received, distributed by domain as follows: 2058 proposals in Physical Sciences and Engineering (43%), 1653 in Life Sciences (35 %) and 1030 (22 %) in Social Sciences and Humanities.

A total of 3329 proposals were submitted: 1486 in Physical Sciences and Engineering, 1073 in Life Sciences and 770 in Social Sciences and Humanities, representing respectively 45%, 32% and 23%.

The results of the statistics by major field of science are to be broken down into ‘natural sciences’, ‘engineering and technology’, ‘medical sciences’, ‘agricultural sciences’, ‘social sciences’ and ‘humanities’.

Calls for consolidation of multi- and transdisciplinary research and recognition of the social dimension of research; in this context, recalls that grand societal challenges should be dealt with – apart from technological responses – by means of European research in social sciences and humanities and social innovation, which remain a pivotal asset in successfully addressing those challenges; believes therefore that both an independent subject area covering ‘social and economic sciences and the humanities’, and inclusion of it as an increased component in all agenda-driven actions should be secured in the CSF;

Stresses that wider interdisciplinary perspectives will also be needed to tackle the growing societal challenges effectively; underlines that social sciences and humanities play a vital role in answering the grand challenges that the EU is facing; regrets that the very specific and narrow calls in the Cooperation chapter on socio-economic sciences and humanities makes it very difficult to make new and innovation research in this area;
