Within the Objective 4 programme, the antinomy of objectives led to a preponderance of businesses that had to decide who in their workforce could participate in measures for the adjustment of professional capabilities (adaptation of workers to industrial changes and changes in production systems).

Welcomes the fact that the EGF supported measures will be provided to workers by means of a labour foundation established as a part of the social plan which was agreed with the social partners; recalls that labour foundations are institutions set up by sectoral social partners in order to accompany workers in industrial change with training measures to enhance their employability; recalls, further, that this model of providing active labour market measures was very successful in the past regarding the reintegration of workers into the labour market and the use of the EGF funds for this purpose;
9. is verheugd over het feit dat de door het EFG gesteunde maatregelen aan de werknemers zullen worden aangeboden via een arbeidsstichting die is opgericht in het kader van een sociaal plan dat met de sociale partners is overeengekomen; herinnert eraan dat outplacementstichtingen instellingen zijn die zijn opgericht door sectorale sociale partners om werknemers te begeleiden bij veranderingen in het bedrijfsleven, met opleidingsmaatregelen om hun inzetbaarheid te verbeteren; herinnert er voorts aan dat dit model voor het aanbieden van actieve arbeidsmarktmaatregelen in het verleden uitermate succesvol is geweest met betrekking tot de re-integratie van werknemers op de arbeidsmarkt en het gebruik van de EFG-middelen voor dit doel;

We must go on providing support not only until 2014, but also beyond that time. It is our duty to protect the citizens of the European Union from the many negative impacts of globalisation. This also includes offering workers in industries which are not fully competitive on the world market long-term retraining to allow them to take on other jobs.
Het is onze plicht om de mensen in de Unie te beschermen tegen de talloze negatieve gevolgen van de globalisering. Dat betekent ook dat wij werknemers in sectoren die op de wereldmarkt niet volledig kunnen concurreren, de mogelijkheden moeten bieden om zich om te laten scholen en voor een ander vak te kiezen.

The Commission is, therefore, responding to all the challenges identified by the report on the role of women in industry by taking measures of various kinds: improving equality, working conditions and the role of women in industry, combating stereotypes, creating better conditions for reconciling work and family life and providing general support for companies and workers in industrial sectors in difficulty.
De Commissie werkt dus door middel van verschillende maatregelen aan alle uitdagingen die in het verslag worden genoemd in verband met de rol van vrouwen in de industrie: het verbeteren van de gelijkheid, de arbeidsomstandigheden en de rol van vrouwen in de industrie, het bestrijden van stereotypen, het creëren van betere omstandigheden voor het combineren van beroeps- en privéleven en het geven van algemene steun aan bedrijven en werknemers in industriële sectoren die het zwaar hebben.
