On Sunday, Commission Vice-President Viviane Reding, together with Luxembourg's Minister of Labour, Nicolas Schmit, MEP Charles Goerens, and the Chairman of Belgium's Francophone Christian democratic party, CDH [Centre démocrate humaniste], Benoît Lutgen, will meet around 400 citizens for a citizens' dialogue in the Rockhal in Esch‑Belval, to talk with them about their expectations, concerns and hopes for the future of Europe.
Zondag gaat Viviane Reding, vicevoorzitter van de Europese Commissie, in Esch-sur-Alzette in debat met ongeveer 400 burgers over hun verwachtingen voor en bezorgdheden over de toekomst van Europa. Andere deelnemende politici zijn de Luxemburgse minister van Werkgelegenheid, Nicolas Schmit, Europarlementslid Charles Goerens en de voorzitter van de Belgische partij cdH, Benoît Lutgen. We in the Group of the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats adopted the same approach to the Vienna-based European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia (EUMC), when at the height of the debate – namely when the Centre refused for more than two weeks to publish a study on anti-Semitism which was then published by our fellow Member Mr Cohn-Bendit and others – we asked: ‘Why on earth are you getting EUR 6 million per year if you are not going to publish your reports?’ We were told: ‘You cannot suspend its funding’.

Toen de discussie in volle gang was omdat het centrum twee weken lang weigerde een rapport over antisemitisme te publiceren, dat toen door collega Cohn-Bendit en anderen gepubliceerd is, hebben wij de vraag gesteld: “Waarom krijgen jullie eigenlijk zes miljoen euro per jaar, als jullie rapporten vervolgens niet gepubliceerd worden?” Daarvan werd gezegd dat we dat niet mochten doen.
