A specific "information platform on animal welfare", established within the 7th EU Framework Programme and aiming at facilitating the dialogue and exchange of experiences between stakeholders, is a key element for the implementation of the Action Plan.[3] Improved information to consumers offers the prospect of a virtuous cycle where consumers create a demand for food products sourced in a more animal welfare friendly manner which is transmitted through the supply chain back to the primary producer, who may be able to receive a premium price for their product and thus recoup a portion of any associated higher production costs.
Een specifiek "informatieplatform over dierenwelzijn", opgericht in het kader van het 7e EU-kaderprogramma en bedoeld om de dialoog en de uitwisseling van ervaringen tussen belanghebbenden te vergemakkelijken, is een sleutelelement van het actieplan[3]. − (LT) I voted for this report, since it is particularly important to implement European animal welfare policy and legislation to establish common EU animal welfare standards. Good animal health and good livestock farming are important not only for animal welfare, but also for public health as a whole.
− (LT) Ik heb voor dit verslag gestemd omdat het bijzonder belangrijk is om het Europese dierenwelzijnsbeleid uit te voeren alsmede de wetgeving voor het vastleggen van gemeenschappelijke normen voor dierenwelzijn in de EU. [6] Key conclusion from the “Feasibility study on animal welfare labelling and establishing a Community Reference Centre for Animal Protection and Welfare” submitted by Food Chain Evaluation Consortium and published together with this report (hereafter referred to as “the feasibility study”): “ There is a broad consensus among stakeholders that there are a multitude of current problems regarding animal welfare related information on products of animal origin.

18. No other substance, with the exception of those given for therapeutic, or prophylactic purposes or for the purposes of zootechnical treatment as defined in Article 1(2)(c) of Directive 96/22/EEC (1), must be administered to an animal unless it has been demonstrated by scientific studies of animal welfare or established experience that the effect of that substance is not detrimental to the health or welfare of the animal.
18. Behalve stoffen voor therapeutische of profylactische doeleinden, dan wel zoötechnische behandeling zoals bepaald in artikel 1, lid 2, onder c), van Richtlijn 96/22/EG (1), mogen geen stoffen aan een dier worden toegediend, tenzij uit wetenschappelijke studies naar het welzijn van dieren of uit de ervaring is gebleken dat de stof niet schadelijk is voor de gezondheid of het welzijn van het dier.
