To support technological innovation, the Commission will continue to foster the development, testing and deployment of new energy-efficient technologies , e.g. through the Strategic Energy Technology Plan[48] (SET Plan), in order reduce the costs and improve the performance of energy efficient technologies, generating new solutions and facilitating wide-spread market take-up.

The development of energy technologies should be seen from the perspective of delivering cost-effective energy services to final customers: light, heat, cooling, clean transport etc. Individual technological developments should be assessed for their integration and impact on the whole energy system (production, transmission, distribution and use of energy).

Welcomes the Commission’s announcement that it will issue a communication on energy technology policy in 2013; calls on the Commission, when implementing the relevant parts of the Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET), to focus on technologies which improve the competitiveness of renewables and their integration in the energy system such as grid management, storage technologies or renewable heating and cooling, while not discriminating against proven RES technologies which have been used for many years;

Key EU technology challenges for the next 10 years to meet the 2050 vision: Bring the next generation of renewable energy technologies to market competitiveness; Achieve a breakthrough in the cost-efficiency of energy storage technologies; Develop the technologies and create the conditions to enable industry to commercialise hydrogen fuel cell vehicles; Complete the preparations for the demonstration of a new generation (Gen-IV) of fission reactors for increased sustainability; Complete the construction of the ITER fusion facility and ensure early industry participation in the preparation of demonstration actions; Elaborate alternative visions and transition strategies towards the development of the Trans-European energy networks and other systems necessary to support the low carbon economy of the future; Achieve breakthroughs in enabling research for energy efficiency: e.g. materials, nano-science, information and communication technologies, bio-science and computation.

Aid for the support for new energy technology can be granted according to the criteria set out in Article 4(a) of this Decision, as far as the technology involving investment support for renewable energy production is concerned and Article 4(b) of this Decision, as far as the aid support for new energy technology relates to energy saving investment.
Steun op het gebied van nieuwe energietechnologie kan worden verleend overeenkomstig de criteria van artikel 4, onder a), van dit besluit wat de technologie betreft in het kader waarvan investeringssteun wordt verleend voor duurzame energieproductie, en overeenkomstig de criteria van artikel 4, onder b) van dit besluit met betrekking tot steun voor nieuwe energietechnologie in het kader van investeringen met het oog op energiebesparende maatregelen.
