On the one hand, they could be used to train customs officials, particular with regard to new and complex IPR infringements. On the other hand they could serve to teach consumers how they can recognise such goods and to raise the awareness of the risks associated with them.

The activities under the Programme, namely the European Information Systems, the joint actions for customs officials and the common training initiatives, will contribute to the realisation of the Europe 2020 Strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth by strengthening the functioning of the internal market.

Towards the end of 1997 the World Customs Organisation asked the Commission for financial support for the WCO Fellowship programme, which is intended to help young customs officials in developing countries to work or study in a specific field of customs and participate in training measures for middle-management.
