The main challenge for the international activities of the GNSS Programmes in 2009 will be to ensure the compatibility and interoperability with Galileo, to access global GNSS-related resources and set worldwide standards, to ensure security of the space segment and network of ground stations, while ensuring a stricter control of sensitive GNSS technologies developed with European funding, to join in an international effort to develop innovative applications and specialised applications of supra-regional interest.

2. Operators of passenger stations shall ensure that passenger stations provide access for all users to information, ticketing and commercial activities for railway traffic throughout the comprehensive network and where appropriate information on connection with local and regional transport, in accordance with Commission Regulation (EU) No 454/2011 of 5 May 2011 on the technical specification for interoperability relating to the subsystem ‘telematics applications for passenger services’ of the trans-European rail system.
2. 10. Given that the ocean is a complex system that is difficult to grasp by direct observation, calls upon the Commission to promote the harmonisation of data collection and exchange between Member States through the creation of a European Marine Observation and Information Network; Notes that the implementation of EU policies, such as the Water Framework Directive, Natura 2000 and others, will also involve developing coordinated observation networks;

23. Encourages research centres all over Europe to cooperate in their research into innovative ship engine technology; notes that such research should be bear in mind environmental protection and especially the combating of sea and coastal pollution and the destruction of ecosystems; further calls for the creation of a “European research network on oceans” with the remit of supporting common European maritime research, which could render the EU a global leader in the field;
23. moedigt onderzoekscentra in heel Europa aan samen onderzoek te doen naar innoverende technologieën voor de vervaardiging van scheepsmotoren; stelt dat dit onderzoek in het licht moet staan van de bescherming van het milieu, in het bijzonder van de strijd tegen zee- en kustvervuiling en de vernietiging van ecosystemen; pleit voor de totstandbrenging van een "Europees netwerk voor oceanografisch onderzoek" met het oog op de bevordering van gezamenlijk Europees maritiem onderzoek in de overtuiging dat dit de Europese Unie een positie als wereldleider op dit gebied zou bezorgen;

Both the collapse of the Iron Curtain and – in particular – the eastward enlargement of the European Union two years ago helped to make the use of atomic power in Europe safer. Whereas, as recently as 2001, nine nuclear power stations with a total of 27 blocks of similar design to Chernobyl were connected up to the network, the new Member States, in the accession treaties, undertook to decommission them over the years to come.
