Mechanical defects are a minor contributory factor in road accidents thanks to the widespread introduction of roadworthiness testing and inspection which, for all vehicles from private cars to heavy duty vehicles, have to be carried out in accordance with Community legislation [35]. However, the inspections carried out will need to keep pace with the growing complexity of on-board technologies and the way they operate, to ensure that they function properly throughout the lifetime of the vehicle.
