Commissioner Fischer Boel, acknowledging the vital role of the honey sector and of apiculture in the Community, and recalling inter alia that a three-year programme had been adopted for the sector with a budget of EUR 23 million per year, nevertheless stressed that it was up to Member States to verify whether honey imported into their countries met the requirements imposed by Community legislation (Directive 2001/110/EC and the Regulation on food labelling).
