Calls on China to adopt international standards for products and services with a view to promoting further trade between China and other countries; welcomes the fact that China is increasing its participation in international standard-setting bodies and believes that this should be encouraged and reciprocated by EU participation in China's own standard-setting bodies; stresses the importance of Chinese imports complying with European standards for food and non-food products;

Recalls that human rights and democracy are core EU values and demands that they form an integral part of the negotiations with ASEAN, especially in the PCAs; reiterates the importance that the Parliament attaches to political and civil rights reforms, and welcomes the establishment of the Human Rights Body in the ASEAN Charter and its explicit commitment to the strengthening of democracy, the enhancement of good governance and the rule of law, as well as the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms; expects, therefore, that ASEAN can contribute constructively to the promotion of these values in the region;
