The primary objective of the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO) is to contribute, through consultation and cooperation, to the optimum use, rational management and conservation of fisheries resources in the area included in the NAFO Convention, and to promote ideas for international cooperation in order to improve the sustainable management of deep-sea marine resources according to scientific principles.
De NAFO heeft als prioritaire doelstelling om door middel van raadpleging en samenwerking een bijdrage te leveren aan het optimale gebruik, een verstandig beheer en het behoud van de visbestanden in het gebied dat onder het NAFO-Verdrag valt, en ook om ideeën over internationale samenwerking te bevorderen met als doel het duurzaam beheer van de mariene hulpbronnen op volle zee te verbeteren aan de hand van wetenschappelijke bevindingen.
