Stresses that international human rights law recognises freedom of thought, conscience, religion, belief and political affiliation regardless of registration status, so registration should not be a precondition for practising one’s religion or exercising one’s right to political affiliation; points out with concern that in China all individuals wishing to practice a religion, including the five official religions – Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, Roman Catholicism and Protestantism – are required to register with the Government, and must operate under Government-controlled management boards, and that this interferes with their religious autonomy and restricts their activity; notes further with concern that unregistered religious groups, including house churches and Falun Gong practitioners, face different forms of ill-treatment that restrict their activities and gatherings, including confiscation of property and even detention and imprisonment;
149. onderstreept dat het internationaal recht inzake mensenrechten de vrijheid van denken, geweten godsdienst, overtuiging en politieke voorkeur erkent, ongeacht de status wat betreft registratie, en dat registratie dus geen voorwaarde mag zijn voor godsdienstbelijdenis of voor het uitoefenen van het recht op politieke voorkeur; wijst er bovendien met bezorgdheid op dat in China alle mensen die een godsdienst willen beoefenen, waaronder de vijf officiële godsdiensten – boeddhisme, taoïsme, islam, katholicisme en protestantisme – verplicht worden om zich bij de regering te laten registeren en hun activiteiten onder toezicht van door de regering gecontroleerde raden van bestuur te plaatsen, hetgeen een inmenging is in hun godsdienstautonomie en hun activiteiten beperkt; merkt bovendien met zorg op dat niet-geregistreerde religieuze groepen, waaronder huiskerken en aanhangers van de Falun Gong, te maken krijgen met verschillende vormen van slechte behandeling, die hun activiteiten en bijeenkomsten belemmeren, zoals het in beslag nemen van hun eigendommen en zelfs arrestatie en gevangenisstraffen;

A. whereas Dr Hashem Aghajari, head of the history department at Tarbiat Modaress University in Teheran, was sentenced to death for apostasy by a local court in the town of Hamedan after giving a speech entitled ‘Islamic Protestantism’, reportedly calling for a ‘religious renewal of Shiite Islam’ in which Muslims should not ‘blindly follow religious leaders’,
A. overwegende dat Dr. Hashem Aghajari, hoofd van de faculteit geschiedenis van de Tarbiat Modaress Universiteit van Teheran, wegens geloofsverzaking door een plaatselijke rechtbank in de stad Hamedan ter dood is veroordeeld nadat hij een toespraak had gehouden met als titel "Het islamitisch protestantisme" waarin naar verluidt wordt aangedrongen op een "religieuze vernieuwing van de sjiitische islam" waarbij moslims "religieuze leiders niet blindelings moeten volgen",
