(19b) The International Labour Organization has adopted a Convention 1 and a Recommendation 2 on Radiation Protection, applicable to all activities involving exposure of workers to ionising radiation in the course of work, and requires appropriate steps to be taken to ensure the effective protection of workers in the light of current knowledge.

To reduce these quantities, Directive 96/29/Euratom provides the possibility for low-level radioactive substances to be exempted from nuclear and radiation protection legislation and treated as conventional waste.
Ter vermindering van deze hoeveelheden bestaat op grond van Richtlijn 96/29/Euratom de mogelijkheid om stoffen met een lage radioactiviteit vrij te stellen van de regelgeving met betrekking tot kernenergie en stralingsbescherming en deze conventioneel te behandelen.
