The forthcoming review of the EU budget must not lead to less money for local and regional authorities to invest in sustainable, green and socially fair growth, the Committee of the Regions has warned.

Speaking after a debate on the forthcoming EU budget review at the CoR's external Bureau meeting in Antwerp, the Committee's President Mercedes Bresso warned that Member States' knee-jerk reaction to the economic downturn must not be allowed to impact front-line services, most of which are supplied at the local or regional level.

In its Resolution on the recommendations of the European Convention, adopted at its plenary session on 2 and 3 July, the Committee of the Regions (CoR) started by stressing "the success of the open method of the Convention" which, "in the eyes of elected local and regional representatives, constitutes a significant contribution to the democratic life of the Union", and welcomed the proposal to put this method on a more permanent footing as part of the procedure of reviewing the Treaty establishing the European Constitution.
