I would like, moreover, Commissioner, the Commission to commit itself rapidly, with you, to a process of modernisation and development of intermodal infrastructures, mainly on the international corridors of Road Transport Telematics (RTT), through a European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) equipment system and allowing a genuine junction with the port infrastructures on the one hand and river infrastructures on the other.
Ik zou bovendien graag willen, mijnheer de commissaris, dat de Commissie zich, samen met u, snel ging inzetten voor een moderniserings- en ontwikkelingsproces van intermodale infrastructuren, voornamelijk op de internationale corridors waar telematica voor het wegvervoer (RTT) is ingevoerd.

With regard to the migration of the current electronic toll systems, based on microwave systems, to satellite technology, I will say that this is the only solution for the future which allows us to respond to the various needs of the European Union’s charging policy and which will furthermore allow us to considerably improve the quality of road transport, thanks to the establishment of new telematic services and new possibilities, particularly security systems, such as speed restrictors, anti-collision devices, the monitoring of the traffic in dangerous goods, information for travellers – in accordance with their position – on the situation on the different roads and on the fluidity of traffic at different points etc.
Met betrekking tot de overschakeling van de huidige elektronische tolheffingsystemen, waarbij gewerkt wordt met microgolven, naar de satelliettechnologie, zou ik willen zeggen dat dat de enige oplossing is voor de toekomst die tegemoetkomt aan de verschillende behoeften in het Europese tolheffingbeleid en waarmee de kwaliteit van het wegtransport bovendien aanzienlijk kan worden verbeterd dankzij de invoering van nieuwe telematicadiensten en nieuwe mogelijkheden, met name op veiligheidsgebied, zoals snelheidsbegrenzers, anti-botsingapparaten, begeleiding van het vervoer van gevaarlijke stoffen, informatie aan reizigers over de situatie op de verschillende snelwegen en de doorstroming van het verkeer op verschillende punten, etc.
