The wealthiest countries are showing less and less solidarity; the principles of economic and social cohesion in the Treaty are being totally trampled underfoot; the most recent rounds of enlargement have taken place without any fresh financial resources; and the situation is set to get worse, with the British Presidency proposing more cuts for the new Member States and for cohesion countries such as Portugal.
De solidariteit van de rijkste landen brokkelt steeds verder af. Het beginsel van economische en sociale samenhang dat in het Verdrag is verankerd, wordt met voeten getreden, en voor de laatste uitbreidingsronde zijn geen nieuwe financiële middelen vrijgemaakt. De situatie zal er beslist ook niet beter op worden, aangezien het Britse voorzitterschap voorstelt om nog meer te snoeien in de middelen die voor de nieuwe lidstaten en cohesielanden zoals Portugal worden uitgetrokken.
