Animal welfare considerations as well as toxicological aspects like the relevance to the human route of exposure to the chemical (e.g. oral gavage to model ingestion, subcutaneous injection to model inhalation or dermal adsorption), the physical/chemical properties of the test material and especially existing toxicological information and data on metabolism and kinetics (e.g. need to avoid first pass metabolism, better efficiency via a particular route) have to be taken into account when choosing the route of administration.
Bij het kiezen van de toedieningsweg moet rekening worden gehouden met zowel overwegingen met het oog op dierenwelzijn als toxicologische aspecten, zoals de relevantie voor de weg van blootstelling van de mens aan de stof (bv. orale maagsonde t.o.v. inname volgens het model, subcutane injectie t.o.v. inhalatie of dermale adsorptie volgens het model), de fysisch-chemische eigenschappen van de teststof en met name bestaande toxicologische informatie en gegevens over metabolisme en kinetiek (bv. noodzaak om first-passmetabolisme te voorkomen, betere efficiëntie via een bepaalde weg).
