The Union will continue to support the implementation of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), in particular by taking action in striving to achieve a land degradation neutral world as agreed at Rio + 20.

Several countries are developing or have developed plans in order to fulfil commitments in relation to the UNCCD and this conference should provide an opportunity to describe progress and problems in tackling soil erosion thus contributing to the Commission's reflections for the Communication.

The European Community and its Member States have played an active role in the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF), which was established in 2000, and have committed themselves to implementing provisions of other international agreements, conventions and protocols, such as: UNFCCC[3] and its Kyoto Protocol, CBD[4], UNCCD[5], ITTO[6], and CITES[7].

UNDERLINES the importance of the work of the Intersessional Intergovernmental Working Group (IIWG) to foster the development of the Convention and its proposal for a “Ten-Year Strategic Plan and Framework to Enhance the Implementation of the UNCCD”; STRESSES that consideration and final adoption by COP 8 of the Ten-Year Strategic Plan and the subsequent comprehensive implementation of the Plan will decisively contribute towards achieving the UNCCD objectives.
