C. whereas the promotion of decent work for all at all levels should be a global objective, as called for by the World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalisation, the UN resolution on the 2005 World Summit Outcome and the ministerial declaration adopted by the UN Economic and Social Committee on 5 July 2006; whereas that objective should also be part of the efforts to realise the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the commitments of the 1995 Copenhagen World Summit for Social Development,

The series began with the World Conference on Education for All, held in Jomtien, Thailand, and the World Summit for Children held in New York in 1990, and continued with the UN Conference on Environment and Development, held in Rio in 1992, the World Conference on Human Rights, held in Vienna in 1993, the World Summit for Social Development, held in Copenhagen, and the World Conference on Women, held in Beijing in 1995, and the Habitat II Conference, held in Istanbul, and the World Food Summit held in Rome in 1996.

The own-initiative opinion of the Economic and Social Committee (ESC) on the follow-up to the World Summit for Social Development is a contribution to the Special Session of the UN General Assembly to be held in Geneva from 26 to 30 June 2000, at which implementation of the outcome and undertakings of the World Summit held in Copenhagen in 1995 will be assessed (Rapporteur: Mr Thomas ETTY, Group II, Netherlands).
Het initiatiefadvies "De follow-up van de wereldtop over sociale ontwikkeling" van het Economisch en Sociaal Comité (ESC) vormt een bijdrage voor de speciale zitting van de Algemene Vergadering van de VN die van 26 t/m 30 juni a.s. in Genève wordt gehouden. Vice-President Marin and Commissioner Flynn expressed their hopes that "the World Summit for Social Development would give meaning to the globalisation of the economy, by setting the goal of development centred on people and rooted in a set of principles and rules, espoused across all continents and in all countries, in order to avoid any risk of confrontation and to ensure maximum exchange and cooperation between countries".
Vice-voorzitter Marin en commissaris Flynn spraken de hoop uit dat "de topcoferentie voor sociale ontwikkeling concrete betekenis aan de mondialisering van de economie zal geven door de vaststelling van een ontwikkelingsdoelstelling die de nadruk op de menselijke aspecten legt en die wordt verankerd in een reeks beginselen en regels waarover op alle continenten en in alle landen overeenstemming bestaat, teneinde het gevaar van conflicten te vermijden en een optimale uitwisseling en samenwerking tussen de landen te waarborgen".

11. World summit on social development in Copenhagen The European Council is following the preparations for the world summit on social development in Copenhagen from 6 to 12 March 1995 with particular attention.

On a proposal by Vice-President Marin and Commissioner Flynn, the Commission has today adopted a Communciation[1] to the Council and Parliament concerning the priorities of the European Union as regards the World Summit for Social Development.
